The Garrett Ace 250 – Product Overview

Sometimes it is not easy to find the right Metal Detector, especially when there are many different models to buy.
As a Beginner, you don’t have to spend that much for a great Metal Detector.

In my opinion, the Garrett Ace 250 is one the best Metal Detectors to start with.
It has 5 different Search Modes, an Electronic Pinpointing System and a Depth Indication

In the following, you will get some more details as well as Pros and Cons.

Comfortable, Good Quality and a Fair Price

The Garrett Ace 250 is quite easy to handle and the LCD Display indicates everything you need for great treasure hunting sessions. The Metal Detector weighs about 2.7 lbs. , which is neither lightweight nor too heavy for comfortable sessions.

The LCD – Display – It Just Looks Great!

The Display can be divided into different parts. On the left Side, there are Five Search Modes

You can switch between:

  • All-Metal
  • Jewelry
  • Custom
  • Relics
  • Coins

Using ‘All-Metal’ Mode is mostly the best way to start because you want to get many different signals at the beginning. If you start discriminating (we will get to this point later on), you will search much longer to get a signal and you can get frustrated.

On the top of the Display, there is a black bar. When switching on the device, every single box is visible. This means you search for everything metallic.
By pressing ‘Discrim’ and ‘Elim’, you can discriminate or “filter out” different metals. If you want to go for Gold or Silver only, you can for example remove the boxes on the left side by selecting them using “Discrim” and removing them by pressing “Elim”.

The Detector has also a Depth Indication, which indicates the depth from 2” to 8+”. This Indication is very helpful because you roughly know how deep you have to dig for the item.
In my experience, it has not always been accurate but it gives a rough depth estimation, which is sufficient.

Electronic Pinpointing – Helps You To Locate Your Finds

One of the things I like the most about the Garrett Ace 250 is definitely the Electronic PinPointer. Especially when you find a small object like coins or buttons, it is super helpful to have this feature! I have been using my Ace 250 for more than three years and most of the times it helped me to locate my finds better.

However, if you set sensitivity too high, the electronic PoinPointer might not work that accurate as with moderate sensitivity. Moreover, the higher you set sensitivity, the more signals you get. Especially in a highly mineralized ground, this can be annoying.

Different Signals – Different “BEEPS”

Depending on the metal you find, you will get a different “Beep-tone”. A high tone mainly indicates precious metal like gold or silver. Deep tones stand for iron (nails etc.)

In the following, you can see two examples. Have an eye on the black bar on the top of the display.

1. 999/1000 Silver Eagle

In this case, the black box appears on the right, which means Silver.  It also indicates “Silver” above the bar.

2. Iron Nails

When finding Iron Nails, the Garrett Ace 250 will indicate this. The black box is on the left side of the bar. Above it says “Iron/Foil”
As soon as you get a signal with the box on the left, it is probably no Silver or Gold Treasure!

Waterproof Coil – Find Treasures in Creeks

The 6.5″ x 9″ Search Coil is waterproof! Treasure Hunting in Creeks can be huge fun.

My Pros and Cons – The Garrett Ace 250

  • Fair Price
  • Electronic Poinpointer, Depth Indication and 5 different Search Modes
  • Easy to handle

  • Depth Indication is not always 100% accurate
  • you can’t adjust the volume – sometimes the “Beep-Tones” are quite loud. However, you can use Headphones!

Conclusion – The Best Metal Detector for Beginners?

In my opinion, the Garrett Ace 250 is a great Metal Detector for Beginners. It has all features you need when starting with this hobby.
Moreover, the price is fair and you get a high quality device.

Metal Detecting Beach – How to find Treasures on the Beach

Metal Detecting on the Beach

Hanging out and Sunbathing on the Beach is one of the best things one can do! When it comes to Metal Detecting on the Beach, you can expect a lot. Obviously, people lose jewelry, money and other precious things on the beach.

The biggest advantages are definitely the digging conditions and the fabulous view while detecting. Digging in sand is usually no problem and a lot easier than digging a hole in the woods or on fields.

Therefore, you absolutely should head out to the next beach and start scanning several areas. In the following, I am going to give you the best tips regarding locations on the beach and what to have an eye on while Metal Detecting on the Beach

Bathing in Summer – Bonfires in Winter

In Summer, people tend to spend their time in or near the water. Therefore, you should scan areas near the water. Usually, even if you do not have an underwater metal detector, the lower part of your device is nearly almost waterproof.

Of course, do not forget searching the towel line. Mostly, the towel line is close to the water. If your aren’t sure where exactly to search, maybe have a quick look at the beach after lunch to find out where the towel line is.

In Winter, many people enjoy making a bonfire and a Picnic. This is perfect, because you can come to these places and scan near them to find everything which has been dropped! Certainly, you can scan areas near the water too. However, in winter, focusing on picnic and fireplaces should be the first priority.

The Ocean Comes and Goes

In general, there is high tide and low tide. At High Tide, the beach is covered by more water and therefore, the beach area gets smaller. In contrast to that, water draws back at Low Tide and the covered beach during High Tide gets visible again.

When you want to find treasures when Metal Detecting on the beach, you should go out and start scanning during Low Tide. Everything, which has been washed up at High Tide lies on the beach now and it is your chance to find awesome objects.

Metal Detecting on the Beach – Do’s and Dont’s

Firstly, the slower you swing your search coil, the better your detector works. To put it simply, signals can be picked up easier, especially in high depth. Therefore, do not rush. Otherwise, you may miss some interesting stuff.

Secondly, cleaning your detector after using it on the beach is recommendable. When it comes to salt water, it is better to give it a wash. In general, take care of your searching coil. With the time, your coil gets scratched and the searching accuracy can decrease tremendously.

Beach Metal Detecting Equipment

Moreover, get yourself a Pinpointer and a Sand Scoop. When dealing with jewelry or coins, a Pinpointer is quite useful. Oftentimes, bracelets, rings and other precious objects aren’t that big. Searching without a Pinpointer is possible, but it definitely takes you much longer to locate your finds. Maybe you have to start digging several times to find the treasure, so use a Pinpointer

Obviously, a Sand Scoop is made for Sand. When using a usual shovel, you always have to search twice. Digging with a Sand Scoop let’s sand through and everything else is immediately visible. In case, you do not want to buy one, go and do it yourself.

Be Prepared!

Whenever you now there’s a Beach Party somewhere, scan the area after it to find good things. People lose a lot while partying, jumping around and having fun!

Do a good deed! When Metal Detecting on a Beach, please take a separate bag with you, where you can put in all the trash you find during scanning the beach.

The same with your treasures, have a bag with you where you can keep and transport them safely. Nothing is worse than damaged treasures!

Last but not least, try to connect with like-minded people via Online Forums etc. Oftentimes, they discuss about good places to search and maybe you find someone you can metal detect with. Doing it together or even in a group is fun!

Please always get a permit before scanning areas on beaches. Oftentimes, people are more than happy giving you the right to metal detect a beach, because you will definitely find trash too and thus it helps to keep the beach clean.

Another important thing to consider is to not disturb sunbathing people on the Beach. Hearing “Beep-Beep-Beep” all the time can be quite disturbing when relaxing.

For this reason, just use headphones in case the beach is crowded. In many cases, proper headphones are already included when buying a Metal Detector.

Especially when Metal Detecting on the Beach, some finds can have emotional value for those who lost them. Maybe someone proposed to his dream partner and accidentally lost the ring. If you can spot an engraving, try to google the name or search Social Media.

Key Takeaways

Metal Detecting on the Beach is basically one of the best things to do when you want to find interesting objects.

In summer, people used to hang out near and in the water. Hence, focus on areas near the water and start scanning even a little bit in the water.

In wintertime, it is also bonfire time and people usually do not prefer spending time in the water, so it is better to scan areas apart from water. Barbecue and Picnic areas are examples for such locations.

Additionally, head out to the Beach at Low Tide. At this time, a bunch of awesome objects has been washed up because of High Tade. Literally, the Ocean brings you all the stuff, you just have to find the precious things!

Also, make sure to get yourself a Sand Scoop and optionally a Pinpointer to locate your finds easily.

Separate all the trash you find while detecting on the beach and throw it away afterwards. For the treasures you find, keep them in a bag where they can not be damaged. Some Jewelry you find may have an emotional value for someone else. As soon as you have found an object with an engraving, try to find the owner by searching the web.

Treasure Hunting with Magnets

When it comes to Treasure Hunting with Magnets or also called Magnet Fishing, you want to find Treasures at the bottom of Lakes, Rivers or the Ocean.

Curious people have already found a bunch of interesting objects using a magnet tied to the end of a rope. Magnet fishing is not for an impatient Treasure Hunter.

Everyone who loves being near the water will definitely enjoy this outdoor activity! Above that, it is great for kids too. They will definitely love magnet fishing.

First Steps

With every Hobby comes some equipment you need to succeed. When it comes to magnets, you will most likely find Neodymium Magnets.

Those Supermagnets are extremely strong and can pull up to 1000 lbs. You do not necessarily need the strongest one on the market, therefore a 200 lbs Magnet is fine to start with. You should also have a look at the size. Mostly, it is better having a large magnet instead of a small one. Simply because of the larger surface and thus a higher probability of finding metal objects.

You can not search a whole river with a little magnet, so just make sure to don’t choose the smallest magnet.

Moreover, get yourself some work gloves. When pulling out the rope with the magnet attached, it is better to use gloves.

Another important point is to use a strong knot when connecting the magnet to the rope. Especially when you want to pull out heavy things, it is crucial to do a proper knot.

Therefore, use the Tautline Hitch Knot when starting. This is a well-known and frequently used knot.

In addition to a rope and a strong neodymium magnet, having a bucket with you is not a bad idea. You can keep your finds there.

The Main Thing – Supermagnet

As already mentioned, having the right magnet is crucial when Treasure Hunting with Magnets.

One of the strongest Magnets are Neodymium Magnets. In relation to their size, they have an incredible pull force. These magnets are also used in the auto and electrical industry. Some magnets are plastic coated for longevity. Make sure they have an integrated lug to attach a rope. If not so, you won’t be able to fasten the magnet properly.

As a beginner, you might struggle which magnet to buy and how strong it should be. Do not overthink! When it comes to pulling force, everything over 300 lbs is enough.

I personally recommend this Super Magnet Kit

Length and Quality – Rope

When it comes to the rope, you should use high quality only. The best material is nylon paracord. Nylon is used in aviation as well as in sailing. It is quite durable and elastic. Depending on the location you want to Treasure Hunt with a Magnet, you should use a different length.

In case, you want to go Magnet Fishing in a river or a small lake, using a 50-70ft rope should be enough. However, if you want to magnet fish from bridges you will definitely need a longer rope. A proper rope should be about 100-150ft long.

Please make sure to dry your rope after using it. Moreover, check the rope for flaws after you have used it several times. Nothing worse than a lost magnet because of a broken rope.

Locations You Should Not Miss!

The location you search may decide whether you find something great or not. Look for frequently visited places like bridges or other urban places. Indeed, you can also search less visited areas. Especially old wells, drains or mills can be quite interesting.

Maybe a brilliant treasure has been laying there for a very long time.

Have a closer look at old towns. Many of those villages have big history and could therefore hide many awesome things. As always, get a permit before magnet fishing and try not to annoy anyone while enjoying your hobby.

As soon as the magnet touches the ground, do not pull to fast. By doing this, you risk to miss somethings and your magnet may lose contact to the ground. Just pull slowly and be patient.

What Can You Expect? – Treasure Hunting Finds

You can find a lot of different items when fishing with a magnet. Many people have found guns, bullets, tools, road signs, precious metals and even bicycles! In case, you want to discover more hidden places, go and ask the elderly.

Oftentimes, they know so much about history and give you advice to find some interesting locations. Moreover, you can search in online in forums for advice. Most people love to share their knowledge or go in groups which is even more fun. Indeed, you can find money too. Maybe someone threw a box filled with gold or money in a river to hide it from someone. You never know…

Whenever you go fishing with magnets, consider the local laws. Even more importantly, do not bother animals or people while magnet fishing. Do not search in conservation areas where you could disturb animals threatened with extinction. When fishing from a bridge, be aware of ships and swimmers. A Supermagnet is quite heavy and might hit something.

However, you also have a positive impact on the environment when pulling out metal things from waters. You can use an extra bucket to put in all the trash you find to throw it away later on.

As already mentioned, neodymium magnets can pull up to 1000lbs. This means, be careful when handling with it. Do never put two magnets together. You might not only hurt your hand but your magnets will break too. Additionally, do not put your magnet on big metal surfaces, otherwise you may be not able to remove the magnet. Pay attention!
