What’s the Best Metal Detector for Gold? – Required Features

When you want to go for Gold, your detector should have automatic ground balancing capabilities. Especially in highly mineralized ground, it is necessary to have Ground Balancing. Otherwise, there are too many signals. Eventually, your detector will only scan for the targets like gold nuggets without any distraction.

Furthermore, it is important that your Detector has a Discrimination Function. This means, you can discriminate or filter out specific metals you don’t want to go for.

Get Familiar with new Techniques

In case, you have always been a Coin Hunter or loved scanning the beach, you have to think differently now.

Most importantly, when it’s your first time metal detecting for gold, you should scan areas where gold has already been found. The chances of Finding Gold are not only higher but there are probably more like-minded people to connect with while Treasure Hunting.

Connecting with other People is crucial, because as a Beginner you have to learn many new things and techniques. Learning from People who have already found Gold is way better than trying it several times without help.

If you have just bought yourself a Metal Detector designed for finding Gold, it is recommendable to hunt in the All-Metal Mode at the beginning. By doing this, you will get familiar with your device.

At the same time, you can practice using a Pinpointer in case you have one. It is not necessary to have one but it helps locating a Gold Nugget and you save a lot of time.

Patient Treasure Hunters do always win! Thus, keep trying and please do not give up. Treasure Hunting needs Passion and Patience

Gold! – Let’s get right into it!

If you want to hit the mother lode, there are basically millions of dollars under earth.

The Deserts of Western United States, Australia, Alaska, Mexico and Africa are well-known areas for prospecting Gold

Step 1 is to use a Metal Detector which has ground balancing. As already mentioned, this is crucial to discriminate any confounding factors like iron in mineralized ground. Therefore, set the Discrimination to Iron rejection. You obviously do not want to detect iron when metal detecting for gold nuggets, right?

Step 2 is to scan not too fast. The slower you search, the deeper signals you get. You are not in a rush! No matter how many useless targets you dig, keep going and never lose hope

Step 3 is to put the potential target in a Gold Pan for further observation. If Gold is trapped in rocks, use your rock hammer to carefully take off the Gold

Step 4 is to scan the content in your Pan again. You can also use a Pinpointer to locate small Nuggets easily

Step 5 is to scan more of the area. As soon as you find Black Sand, there is a high chance of finding Gold too. Black Sand is a special form of Sand which often contain a magnetic mineral which is called Magnetite. Never discard Black Sand until you are completely sure there is no Gold in it. You can also use a magnifying glass to spot the tiny gold pieces.

Proper Earphones are usually quite good when Metal Detecting for Gold Nuggets, because you are able to notice even faint signals. Being outside, there are many disturbing noises when you want to concentrate on detecting.

Top Locations To Find Gold Nuggets

You should definitely search in streams. Oftentimes, they were created by the melting of huge glaciers and therefore contain many nuggets.

Make sure to get some gum boots and have fun! People have discovered tons of Gold in Streams and you can do too!

Detecting in and around Old Mines and Tunnels can be awesome too!

There is always the chance that someone dropped Gold or missed a vein long time ago. As soon as you find an old Gold Mine, start using your Metal Detector to scan the material lying on the floor.
You never know! Maybe you are the first person searching there and find Gold. Back then, mine workers weren’t equipped with high technology Detectors. It is your Chance!

How To Search Old Mines

In order to search Old Gold Mines, attach a large search coil to the detector. By doing this, you can reach maximum depth penetration.

Following to this, do the Ground Balancing for local conditions. If you are not sure how to do it properly, have a close look into the manual, you will definitely find an answer.

Also important is to scan slowly. Otherwise, your detector isn’t able to detect accurately in depth. Moreover, make sure you don’t get any false signals coming from your equipment.

Pay attention to the roof of mine tunnels, there can be pieces of rich ore

As soon as you are not sure whether it is Gold or just a rock full of iron, use your rock hammer to examine the target. Have a close look at ore lying around in the mine. Oftentimes, these Ore rocks can contain Gold. Scanning them thoroughly could be profitable!

Mine Dumps Are Incredible

Mine Dumps are locations were ore from a mine was stored before transportation. The great thing here is that the material is already laying outside, so you do not have that much work.

You can take your Metal Detector and scan the area, maybe someone has left Gold or overlooked some.

Additionally, scanning the roads can be profitable too. Mine Rocks were often used to build roads in the mud.

When you have a signal within a big rock, start breaking it up. Gold could hide in there! Moreover, you don’t have to transport worthless rocks when breaking relevant pieces out before.

You can have a look at Dredge Tailings too. Gold Dredges are big machines that extracts gold from gravel, sand or dirt.

They work as follows: A gold dredge excavates material using steel buckets. Thereafter, the material is sorted by a huge rotating steel cylinder. By doing this, oversize material gets sorted out and stored behind the dredge. Undersized material like Gold can go through for further washing.

The material deposited behind the dredge can still contain precious metal! If a rock is too big for the cylinder, it doesn’t mean there is no Gold inside.

Oftentimes, these machines were installed in river valleys. Try to get access to an area like this and start searching. Good Luck!

Be a Pro – Surface Suction Dredging

Gold Dredges have always been used to extract Gold. Nowadays, there are several modern dredges. They are basically mounted on flotation devices which float the engine pump and other components above the water. The machine sucks up sand, gravel and rocks from stream beds.

The sluice box, which is a part of the dredging machine too, sorts out large rocks and other materials. Therefore, Material is pulled up because of the suction hose and gets onto the riffles in the sluice box. Heavier material like gold gets trapped there. Some states require a dredging permit, some do not allow it at all

Above all, please have in mind how dangerous it can be to enter a mine. Sometimes, they are not well obtained and you risk your life by entering it alone.

Moreover, make sure to have permission before entering an Old Gold Mine. Maybe someone bought this Mine and you are on private property.

You can get yourself a Prospecting Permit for a few dollars. Do not miss it!

How To Panning For Gold

The Precious Metal Gold has always excited people. As a Treasure Hunter, you can have a lot fun panning for Gold. Above that, there can be tremendous profit without many costs. This post is about Tips for Gold Panning, Gold Panning Equipment and interesting additional info.

Variety of Gold Deposits

Generally, you can find Gold in many forms.

For a Beginner, the most common form is Placer Gold, which you can find in streams as well as in dry sand.

When talking about Placer Mining, it is the practice of separating Gold from lighter materials like sand. The only thing you need is water and a pan.

The lighter material gets spilled out. Therefore, the fact that Gold is heavier than materials like sand or gravel, is the basic concept used in Placer Mining.

Gold Nuggets, which are big pieces of Gold.

They can be found in veins or in Placer Deposits. A Gold Vein is just Gold, which is trapped in Granite or Quartz. This line looks like a vein.

Of course, you can Metal Detect for Gold too. Detectors can help you locate Gold Deposits so you can find big nuggets.

Perfectly Equipped – Gold Panning Equipment

Essential Tools:

  • Firstly, you need a Gold Pan. There is a wide range of different sizes. Using a 14-15 inch pan is recommendable. Sometimes, having two pans with different sizes can help. Therefore, you can use a 10-inch Pan in addition to a big one. Oftentimes, many kits include both a large Pan and a smaller one.

gold-panning-equipment

  • Secondly, you need a Gold Sieve. Nearly every kit you can buy includes a Plastic Gold Sieve. You will need the gold sieve to sort out big rocks before you start panning
  • Moreover, a Snuffer Bottle is needed to vacuum up fine gold from the pan. After vacuum up the gold, you should keep it in Gold Vials
  • Last but not least, it is recommendable using Tweezers to pick up small Gold Pieces. Sometimes, you can find Tweezers with a magnifier attached

Additional Tools:

  • To stay dry, using rubber boots or waders isn’t a bad idea
  • Additionally, you can take a rock hammer with you and a shovel. In case, you want to pan a lot, use a bucket or an Ore Bag to put in all the rocks and gravel. Otherwise, you always have to go back to the place you were digging.

Wet Panning or Dry Panning?

The Most Common Method – Wet Panning:

As already mentioned, most Pans are out of Plastic, which is super light and doesn’t attack metal. Moreover, it will last for decades and won’t start rusting.

Wet Panning has always been used and is therefore the most traditional Method when it comes to Hunting for Gold.

If You Want To Succeed in Wet Panning, Follow These 8 Steps Below:

  1. Firstly, always place the Gold Sieve atop of the Gold Pan and fill it with gravel, sand and rocks. Do not put too much material in the sieve. Especially as a Beginner, it is perfect to start with less.
  2. The next step is to use a twisting and shuffling motion to shake the sieve. Make sure the pan is directly below the sieve. Small gravel, Sand and Gold will pass and settle in the Pan
  3. Checking the remaining stuff in the sieve is quite important. You do not want to miss a large gold nugget among other rocks.
  4. Finally, you remove the sieve. Please make sure to not discard any Gold Nugget!
  5. Now, you can start Panning for Gold. You do this by holding the Gold Pan with both hands and begin rotating the contents. The ultimate goal is that heavier contents like gold begin to settle. During the process, remove bigger rocks or gravel. The Water should carry off lighter material. Do not rotate too fast, otherwise you will lose potential Gold.
  6. If you have a smaller Pan, you can transfer all remains into it and repeat the process.
  7. Usual Gold Pans have riffles on one side. Make sure these riffles are on the lower side during panning. The heavier gold should settle into the riffles and get trapped there.

Do it as long as it needs to carry off everything light.

At the end, you can use tweezers to take out bigger gold pieces and the Snuffer Bottle to vacuum up fine gold from the water.

In case, you want to practice Gold Panning, use BB Gun Pellets, they are quite similar to Gold.

Dry Panning:

In contrast to wet panning, dry panning requires more skill. However, especially when you are in desert areas without water, it is the only method to use. Basically, you collect material and sort out large rocks.

The best thing is to use a bucket or an Ore Bag to store the material. As always, we want Gold to settle and lighter material to flow out.

This means, you start bumping the pan while you tilt it to a 45 degree angle. By doing this, the lighter material can flow out. As always, do not go too fast, otherwise you accidentally miss Gold!

Especially Deserts of Western America are supposed to contain a lot of Gold. Above that, try to get information about places where people used to hunt for Gold several years ago. Moreover, connect with other like-minded people via Forums or Social Media. You will always learn something new about Gold Panning.

Please make sure…

…to always get a permission for Prospecting. In many cases, it is private ground and someone own the land you are searching on. In case, you can spot a Posted Sign, it is even more dangerous and forbidden to start Gold Hunting there. Do not risk anything!

…to understand that the more effort and practice you put into gold panning, the more likely it is to succeed and find gold. As always, do not give up too early. There is absolutely no guarantee in finding gold. It is up to you! Patient treasure Hunters always win!

Apart from this, take your kids with you. Being outside is good for the body and soul. Too many kids are constantly playing video games and therefore miss the beauty of nature!

Metal Detecting Finds – Coins, War Relics or Jewelry?

Sometimes, sticking to a plan can be quite useful. When Metal Detecting, deciding what you want to search for can be advantageous too. Especially when you don’t want to start searching for useless things like old trash, specializing your preferred finds gives you structure.

Whether you want to go Metal Detecting for Gold Coins or for Civil War Relics, you always have to adjust the settings properly and keep some things in mind. By doing this, nothing can go wrong and it’s highly probable for you to find what you desire.

Metal Detecting for Coins – How to Prepare and Search like a Pro!

No matter whether you want to find money or old ancient coins, everything is possible with a Metal Detector. When metal detecting for coins, make a plan. Firstly, you should definitely take a little bag with you to keep the coins safe after finding them.

Nothing is worse than putting them in your pants pocket or something like this. When it comes to the question “Where to search for Coins?”, there are several places with great potential.

If your goal is to find ancient coins, you have to think differently than when searching for Money or Civil War Relics. When you focus on finding ancient Coins, the best case is to have and old map which shows you old commercial routes. Of course, many of us don’t have maps like this. No Problem!

Therefore, searching along sidewalks and paths in the forest can lead you to really nice things.

Many people use paths like this and maybe have always used them, even hundreds of years ago. Especially when you are in areas where you can spot information boards in the woods, which tell you that Romans have used this place long time ago, you can be sure it’s true and start searching this area thoroughly.

Ancient Coins

The same with old ancient monuments and old buildings, search around them and have fun digging. Above that, always have a closer look at eye-catching objects like boundary stones, huge trees and other interesting places which are quite easy to remember. Maybe someone has used this to bury something and to orientate perfectly even after a long time. When focusing on finding non ancient coins, you preferably should head out to the beach. People lose tons of things there and obviously coins too.

Make sure you have a sand scoop, so your shovel works like a sieve. Additionally, scan along sidewalks and pedestrian areas. Don’t forget to search in your local park and especially on fields after open-air festivals or other public events where many people have been involved.

How to Search and What to have an Eye on when Metal Detecting Coins

As soon as you have your first find at a new location, always make sure to scan again near the object. Oftentimes, especially when it comes to coins, there are many of them at the same place. Nearly every Metal Detector has a Target Identification or an integrated Pinpointer, which allows you to determine the coin in a better way.

Usually, a coin is quite small, so it is more efficient to locate it before you start digging for too long. Moreover, a Pinpointer can help you a lot. Generally speaking, a Pinpointer is a small device to pinpoint and determine the location of your finds in an easy and highly accurate way.

Ancient Coins

Always have a look what your detector says! Sometimes, the depth indicator estimates the object in a depth of around 10-15 inches. Think twice before digging, it must not always be a coin.

Sensitivity and Accuracy always decreases when you want to locate an object which is quite deep.

Above all, listen to the sound your detector makes when receiving a signal! Search thoroughly when receiving a sharp tone and think twice of starting to dig when you hear a deep tone. The sharper the tone is, the higher is the chance of Gold Coins, Silver Coins or any other precious metal.

Please be careful during digging to don’t destroy your object. When it comes to ancient coins, they are fragile and can be easily damaged. Imagine you find a unique ancient Roman Coin but break it because you weren’t careful enough when digging it out. Would be a pity, so be sensitive!

Civil War – Metal Detecting for Civil War Relics

In case, you love collecting Civil War Relics objects, you can look forward to finding lots of interesting things when Metal Detecting e.g for Civil War Relics. As always, when you know old battle fields or spot a huge field or a nice location in the woods, go and search it!

Mostly, it is quite easy to reach places like this and searching is easy. When searching for Civil War Relics, you can start digging whenever you get a signal.

Metal Detecting Civil War

In contrast to Jewelry, Civil War Relics stuff is nearly always out of iron or sometimes aluminum, so every signal might be a hit. When you focus on finding objects regarding Civil War or other wars, please search and dig carefully. In case, you find a dud, go away and call the police.

They handle it and people will remove it. Every time you go out Metal Detecting, you never know what to expect. No matter where you are, there can be dangerous stuff.

The Rich Treasure Hunter – Go for Jewelry

Metal Detecting for Jewelry is quite similar to Metal Detecting for Coins. Both Coins and Jewelry are often lost at crowded and frequently used places like paths, fireplaces, benches and campgrounds. As already mentioned, searching on a Beach has great potential.

Sometimes it just takes a second and you realize you have lost your bracelet or ring. It can be hard to find your jewelry in the sand.

Regarding settings, it is recommendable to use high sensitivity and filter out aluminum and iron. This is because you will find a huge amount of trash when not doing so! Some models have an integrated “Jewelry” category you can use if you want.

Therefore, you go for Silver Jewelry, Gold Jewelry and other valuable materials. Searching the lawn at an open air bath can be profitable as well as scanning a Volleyball Court or areas under bridges (maybe someone dropped anything from it). Go for it!

Before doing this, please make sure you have a permit or an owner has agreed on it. In general, you are responsible to have a look at the local laws before Metal Detecting. Each country has different laws regarding Treasure Hunting.

Gold Rings and Jewelry

Metal Detecting for Treasures is NO Rocket Science!

Summing it up, it is helpful to make a plan first. Locations and Settings are never the same, they always change depending on your preferred finds. When you want to metal detect Silver, Gold or other Precious Metals, avoid poor signals like iron or aluminum, use high sensitivity and in the best case a Pinpointer.

The sharper the tone is, the more likely it is to find a unique object. In contrast to this. Scan places like Beaches, Fields and Paths. Civil War Relics will primarily give you signals with a deep tone, leading you to objects mostly consisting out of iron.

Above this, always be careful when digging, no matter where you are, you never know what to expect. Also, make sure to know about the local laws concerning Treasure Hunting.
